What is HTTP/2?
HTTP/2 is the second major revision of the HTTP protocol. It brings radical performance improvements: request multiplexing, header compression (HPACK), binary protocol framing and server push. Most modern websites should support it.
HTTP/2 Benefits
Multiplexing
Multiple simultaneous requests over a single TCP connection.
HPACK Compression
HTTP headers are compressed to reduce bandwidth usage.
Binary Protocol
Binary frames are more efficient than HTTP/1.1 plain text.
Server Push
The server can send resources before they are even requested.
HTTP/1.1 vs HTTP/2
| Feature | HTTP/1.1 | HTTP/2 |
|---|---|---|
| Connections per domain | 6 max | 1 (multiplexed) |
| Message format | Text | Binary |
| Header compression | No | HPACK |
| Server Push | No | Yes |
| Request prioritization | No | Yes |
How to use this tool?
- 1Enter the full site URL (with https://) in the field
- 2Click submit to check HTTP/2 support
- 3The result shows whether HTTP/2 is enabled or not on the server
What to do if HTTP/2 is disabled?
- Contact your hosting provider to enable HTTP/2 on your web server.
- Make sure your site uses HTTPS (HTTP/2 requires TLS).
- Use a CDN like Cloudflare that enables HTTP/2 automatically.
